Renting furniture in Belgium: the story of Josef and his family

When Josef Kopecky and his family moved from the Czech Republic to Belgium in 2023, they knew exactly what international relocations could feel like. This wasn't their first assignment abroad. But this time, things were different. Instead of inheriting furniture selected by someone else, they had something they had rarely experienced before: choice.

As a three-star General serving at SHAPE, NATO's Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe near Mons, Josef Kopecky is no stranger to international assignments.

Over the course of his military career, the Czech officer and his family have experienced several relocations. In 2023, another chapter brought them from the Czech Republic to Belgium for a three-year assignment.

Together with his wife and son, Josef settled near Mons. And while moving abroad was nothing new, this relocation came with a pleasant surprise: for the first time, his family had the freedom to create a home that truly reflected their own taste.

A soft landing for a Czech family in Belgium

Unlike previous relocations, where families often had to make do with furniture chosen by others, this assignment offered much more freedom. By renting an unfurnished home, Josef and his family could create an interior that reflected their own lifestyle and preferences.

"For only six weeks, we lived with interim furniture. Once the final pieces became available, everything was replaced.”

Speed and flexibility

During the contract, Josef occasionally needed additional items. A few extra chairs, some small requests and questions along the way. Every time, the response was quick.

“As someone who prefers communicating by email, I appreciated the fact that answers never took long. And when something was urgent, picking up the phone was enough.”
